The Ultimate Checklist for Buying a Used Car in India
October 8, 2025·6 min read
A used car is one of the largest purchases you'll make on RUSTI. A little due diligence can save you lakhs. Here's your complete pre-purchase checklist.
Documents to Verify
•RC Book (Registration Certificate): Check the owner's name matches the seller's ID, engine number, chassis number, and fuel type.
•Insurance: Confirm it's valid and the vehicle is covered for third-party at minimum.
•Pollution Certificate (PUC): Must be current.
•No Objection Certificate (NOC): Required if the car was originally registered in a different state.
•Loan clearance: Run an RTO check or ask the seller for a bank NOC to ensure no pending hypothecation.
Physical Inspection
1.Check for rust under wheel arches and along the bottom of doors.
2.Open every door, boot, and bonnet — ensure they close flush.
3.Look for panel paint mismatches (sign of accident repairs).
4.Start the engine cold — listen for unusual noises.
5.Check all electrics: AC, windows, music system, lights.
6.Inspect tyres for even wear.
Test Drive
•Drive on both smooth roads and rough ones.
•Test the brakes firmly at 60 km/h — no pulling to either side.
•Check the clutch biting point (for manual cars).
•Note any vibrations at highway speed.
Get a Pre-Purchase Inspection
For cars above ₹2 lakh, spend ₹500–₹1,500 on a mechanic's inspection. They'll check the suspension, underbody, and run a diagnostics scan.
Negotiate Confidently
Every used car has room to negotiate. Common leverage points: service history gaps, minor cosmetic issues, age of tyres, and how long the listing has been active.
Transfer of Ownership
Complete Form 29 and 30 at the local RTO within 14 days of purchase. Both buyer and seller must be present.
