Safety Tips

Buying and selling locally is safe when you follow these simple guidelines. Read before your first deal.

🤝

Meet in a Public Place

Always meet buyers or sellers in a well-lit, busy public location — a shopping mall, coffee shop, or police station parking lot. Never invite strangers to your home or travel to theirs alone.

🔍

Inspect Before You Pay

Check the item carefully in person before handing over money. Test electronics, check for scratches or damage, and verify serial numbers match the listing. If something feels off, walk away.

💸

Avoid Advance Payments

Be very cautious about paying for an item before seeing it, especially through UPI or bank transfer to someone you've never met. Scammers often disappear after receiving advance payment.

🆔

Verify Identity for High-Value Items

For cars, bikes, or electronics worth ₹10,000+, ask for a government ID and verify ownership documents. Check RC books for vehicles and original purchase receipts for electronics.

🔒

Keep Conversations on RUSTI

Use RUSTI's messaging or WhatsApp link rather than sharing your personal phone number upfront. Keeping communication on platform helps if you need to report issues later.

⚠️

Watch Out for These Red Flags

Be cautious if: the price is suspiciously low; the seller insists on urgent payment; photos look taken from the internet; the seller can't meet in person; they ask you to share OTPs or banking details.

👨‍👩‍👧

Bring a Friend

For high-value transactions, bring a friend or family member. Two people are harder to take advantage of, and the extra pair of eyes helps evaluate the item objectively.

📝

Get a Receipt

For significant purchases, write a simple receipt with both parties' names, item description, agreed price, date, and signatures. A photo of the receipt works just as well.

🚗

Buying a Vehicle? Do This

Always take a test drive. Check the chassis number on the RC book matches the vehicle. Run an RTO check online. Verify insurance and check for pending loans on the vehicle.
