Used Car Value Calculator
A car's resale price is set by a longer list of variables than almost anything else on this site โ and unlike a phone, several of them are documentary rather than physical. Two identical cars of the same year and colour can differ by a large margin purely on ownership count and service history.

What decides the price
Kilometres driven versus age
Buyers read these two together, not separately. A five-year-old car with low running is often valued above a three-year-old car with heavy highway use, because wear tracks distance more closely than it tracks years.
Number of previous owners
First-owner cars command a clear premium, and the drop from first to second owner is larger than from second to third. This is one of the few factors a seller cannot improve before selling.
Fuel type and policy risk
Diesel vehicles carry additional resale risk in cities with age-based restrictions on diesel registration, and that risk is priced in well before the deadline arrives. Petrol and CNG generally hold more predictable value in those markets.
Service history and accident record
A complete, stamped service record from an authorised centre measurably raises what buyers will pay. A recorded major accident repair reduces value sharply even after a flawless repair โ buyers price the history, not just the metal.
Insurance, RC and pending challans
Valid insurance, a clean RC, and no outstanding challans keep the sale simple. Paperwork problems don't just reduce the price, they routinely stall sales entirely while the buyer waits.
Typical depreciation
Bands are typical for mass-market hatchbacks and sedans. Popular SUVs and models with long waiting periods depreciate more slowly; luxury cars depreciate considerably faster, particularly after warranty expiry when maintenance costs deter buyers.
| Age | Typically retains | What's happening |
|---|---|---|
| Year 1 | ~75โ85% | The largest single-year loss; it begins the moment it's registered |
| Year 3 | ~55โ65% | Common resale point, still under or near warranty |
| Year 5 | ~40โ50% | Widest spread between well-kept and neglected examples |
| Year 8 | ~25โ35% | Condition and service record now matter more than model |
| Year 10+ | ~15โ25% | Local regulations on vehicle age start to dominate |
How condition changes the number
Full service history, single owner, no accident record, tyres and battery with life remaining.
Minor cosmetic marks, all servicing done, nothing mechanical outstanding.
Visible scratches or dents, some servicing overdue, tyres near replacement.
Known mechanical issues, deferred maintenance, or bodywork required.
Structural repair is priced in heavily regardless of repair quality, and is usually discovered during inspection anyway.
Does location change the price?
Location matters more for cars than for any other category. Registration state affects transfer paperwork and cost; cities with diesel age limits price diesel vehicles lower; and demand differs by body type โ compact hatchbacks move faster in dense metros, SUVs command more in smaller cities and hill regions.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a car depreciate in the first year?
Typically 15โ25% of purchase price, making year one the single most expensive year of ownership. Much of that loss happens at registration, before any distance is covered.
Does a full service history really increase resale value?
Yes, and it is one of the few levers still available to you at selling time. A stamped record from an authorised service centre reduces buyer uncertainty about hidden problems, which is what discounts are usually protecting against.
Should I repair dents before selling?
Minor cosmetic work usually pays for itself, because visible damage invites buyers to negotiate far beyond its actual repair cost. Major mechanical work often does not โ buyers rarely pay back the full cost of a big repair.
Does kilometres driven matter more than the year?
They matter together. Unusually low running for the age raises value, but suspiciously low running invites scrutiny of the odometer, so be ready to show service records that corroborate it.
