Used Laptop Value Calculator

Laptops are valued on specification more than on brand or looks. A four-year-old machine with a strong processor and upgraded memory can be worth more than a two-year-old entry-level model, which is why age-based rules of thumb mislead badly in this category.

What decides the price

Processor generation

This is the primary driver. Buyers shop by chip generation, and a machine two generations behind current drops noticeably even in perfect condition. Apple Silicon MacBooks have held value distinctly better than comparable Intel-era machines.

RAM and storage

Memory and SSD capacity move the price meaningfully, and upgraded configurations retain a premium. On soldered-RAM machines the original configuration is permanent, which makes higher-spec units disproportionately valuable secondhand.

Battery cycle count and backup

Real-world battery backup is the first question most buyers ask. A machine needing a battery replacement takes a direct deduction roughly equal to the replacement cost.

Screen and keyboard condition

Dead pixels, backlight bleed, and worn or non-working keys are the defects buyers check for in person, and each invites a specific deduction rather than a general one.

Purpose category

Gaming laptops depreciate faster than equivalent business machines — they run hotter, buyers assume heavier use, and GPU generations turn over quickly.

Typical depreciation

Apple laptops consistently sit at the upper end of these bands; entry-level Windows machines under ₹40,000 sit at the lower end and reach their floor sooner. Workstation-class and premium business models hold better than consumer lines.

AgeTypically retainsWhat's happening
Year 1~65–75%MacBooks at the top of the band
Year 2~50–65%Specification matters more than age from here
Year 3~40–55%A processor generation behind current
Year 5~25–35%Battery replacement usually due
Year 6+~15–25%Value largely set by usable specification

How condition changes the number

Like newTop of the band

No marks, strong battery backup, original charger and box.

GoodAround −10%

Light wear on palm rest or lid, everything functional, decent battery.

FairAround −20 to −25%

Visible scuffs, weak battery, worn keycaps.

Screen or keyboard faultAround −30 to −50%

Deduction tracks repair cost, which on ultrabooks can be substantial.

No chargerAround −5 to −10%

Small but consistent — proprietary chargers cost more to replace than buyers expect.

Does location change the price?

Laptop prices vary little by city since they ship easily, but demand concentrates in metros and university towns. Bangalore, Pune, Hyderabad and Delhi NCR have the deepest buyer pools, which mainly affects how quickly you sell rather than the price you can ask.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a MacBook depreciate?

Less than most Windows laptops. Apple Silicon models in particular have held value strongly, and a well-kept MacBook is often worth more at three years than a comparable Windows machine at two.

Does upgrading RAM before selling increase the price?

On machines with upgradeable memory it usually adds more than the part costs, because it moves the laptop into a higher specification bracket buyers search for. On soldered-memory machines it isn't possible.

Is a laptop with a weak battery still worth selling?

Yes. Buyers deduct roughly the replacement cost rather than walking away, and being upfront about backup time avoids the sale collapsing at handover.

Do gaming laptops hold value?

Less well than business machines of similar price. Buyers assume sustained high-temperature use, and graphics generations move quickly, so the specification dates faster.
